As with many things in life, it pays to not reinvent the wheel when planning and supporting an open source solution such as Moodle. Over the years I have witnessed many innovations found on the main support site at moodle.org and one such change came about when they added the Modules and Plugins Database. Bravo to the moodle.org team for adding a well needed feature.
Since this new feature was added there has been some debate about a better way to review and organise the ever-growing list of third party extensions for Moodle. As the list grows it becomes increasingly hard to sort the wheat from the chaff. Read this discussion started by Moodle Moot AU organiser, Chad Outten from Brisbane. Some good ideas raised over time.
Here at Moodle User Groups we want to add to the ideas and perhaps provide a small solution from which others can benefit. We like the idea of the Joomla Extensions Directory, not just because Joomla is another great example of Open Source Software, but because it simply works and works well as time has attested.
So, over time we hope to add a similar Moodle Extensions Directory here at moodleusergroups.org. We will add many reviews with star ratings and comments on how useful they were for our members to install, configure and use. In addition, we will provide some meta data that will provide a taxonomy for organisation. We feel that this smalll contribution to the Moodle community on the web will help others save time (and money) when working with Moodle's growing collection of third party extensions.
As always, if you have thoughts or question or even the odd review for us to possibly share with other, then please contact us. |
