The following notes were taken at the Sydney Moodle User Group 28 event at Sydney Church of England Girls Grammar School (SCEGGS).
Susan Zipfinger, hosted this month's Sydney Moodle User Group meeting and it was well attended by interested people from around Sydney.
We covered many interesting topics including:
- Joomla meets Moodle
- Integrating Stickam and Moodle
- Demonstration of SCEGGS Moodle
- Demonstration of Checklist module in Moodle
Paul kick-started the night with Joomla meets Moodle: explaining the plan to fully integrate Moodle with the College Website (created using Joomla). Ian demonstrated how Moodle modules are integrated with Joomla inside wrappers using the Joomdle plugin. Quite a bit of discussion ensued about the pros and cons of using the Joomla Content Management System
The SCEGSS primary school Chick-cam raised a few eyebrows when it was first mentioned! The age old conundrum of how to catch your hatching chicks in the act of hatching (when they tend to break out at night) is apparently solved using free web application called Stickam. Just train your webcam on the eggs and your students can keep an eye on them at all hours from wherever they are on the globe.
Finally getting onto Moodle, SCEGGS.net was demonstrated, with our hosts showing us the general structure of their site (Year Groups are the primary categories, with subjects nested beneath that), and the different types of courses on offer. Susan outlined Moodle professional development in the College, and the use of the system for intranet. This led us to a discussion of allowing parental access to the Moodle site, and the differing underlying rationales for parent access in primary vs secondary education.
Finally, Susan took us on a whirlwind tour of the different modules in use at SCEGGS (from Books – defeating the Scroll of Death – to Podcast Modules.
Demonstration of Checklist Module
Danielle re-introduced a few of us to the Checklist module, which seems to be a highly flexible and very useful work-flow tool. The Checklist Module presentation slides as they appear on Slideshare.net:
